SARASOTA, Fla. — A 59-year-old man from Sarasota died as a result of injuries suffered in a collision with a motor vehicle. The deceased man was driving a motor scooter or moped. According to mysuncoast.com, the fatal collision happened on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, around 8:00 p.m. Troopers from the Florida State Patrol commenced an investigation into the crash. The investigation is on-going.
Troopers are investigating the fatal collision state that 59-year-old Brian Bettis was driving the moped, or motor scooter, turning left onto Randor Place from Bee Ridge Boulevard, near Sawyer Road. As the moped operator made the left-hand turn, a vehicle operated by a motorist that police did not identify, collided with the right side of the motor scooter. Photographs and video taken of the crash site show damage indicating that the front passenger’s side of a maroon-colored sedan collided with the motor scooter. The crash threw the scooter and Mr. Bettis dozens of feet away from the impact location.
Reporters at the scene indicated that the tired from the moped was ripped off in the crash. The roadway at the point of the collision has a so-called “left-hand turn only lane” that is marked. The motor scooter had turned beyond that lane at the point of impact.
Emergency medical technicians transported Mr. Bettis to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for emergent trauma care. Treating physicians pronounced him dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
The severity of the crash forced police to close down the westbound lanes of traffic for several hours as police investigated. Yellow caution tape sectioned off the area of the roadway that contained debris from the collision. Officers took important measurements to determine speed and braking distance of the sedan. Investigators will also look at the traffic conditions, the sightlines each respective motorist had just before the collision, and whether distracted driving or inebriated operation played a role in the crash.
