Yesterday, we wrote that Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce issued a voluntary recall of one lot of its organic grape tomatoes sold under the Limited Edition® and Fresh & Easy labels over a possible health risk from the dangerous <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/salmonella">Salmonella pathogen. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced that the recall has been expanded in its geographic scope.
The volume of cases from the original production lot has not changed; however, Andre Williamson Fresh Produce said it recognizes the possibility that some customers may have distributed the organic grape tomatoes beyond the original 18 states indicated in the first recall notice. Because of this, the firm is extending the recall to include all states in the U.S. The recall also includes the two Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Ontario, as initially stated.
One clamshell of Limited Edition organic grape tomatoes tested positive for Salmonella in a random sample collected and tested by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Michigan. All customers who received the organic grape tomatoes directly from the company were notified on September 28 and advised to discard any existing product. No illnesses have been reported in association with this product; however, it is important to note that the effects of Salmonella poisoning can take some time to manifest with symptoms.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which can be life threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or who are undergoing chemotherapy. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea, and vomiting that can last up to 7 days. In some patients, the illness becomes so severe that hospitalization is required.
The organic grape tomatoes are sold in 10.5 oz. plastic “clam shell†containers containing UPC 033383655925 located on the front of the package, below the barcode. The containers also have the words “LIMITED EDITION†and “Product of Mexico†printed on the label. The organic grape tomatoes are also sold in 7-ounce plastic clam shell containers with Barcode 20025465, and marketed under the “Fresh & Easy†brand.
The voluntary recall only involves Limited Edition and Fresh & Easy labeled organic grape tomatoes and does not involve any other Limited Edition or Fresh & Easy branded produce items.
Consumers in possession of the recalled product with UPC code 033383655925 or barcode 20025465 should not consume the recalled tomatoes and should discard them. As an added safety measure, retailers are encouraged to check their inventories and store shelves to confirm that the defective tomatoes are no longer available for purchase.
