SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation, intended to bring internet access to remote regions, now poses an unexpected risk to people on the ground. Multiple incidents have surfaced involving Starlink satellite components falling to Earth — including sizable, potentially dangerous debris landing on farmland in Canada. While no deaths have been reported yet, the dangers are no longer theoretical.
Parker Waichman LLP, a national personal injury and wrongful death law firm, is investigating
claims on behalf of individuals injured or killed due to falling Starlink satellite parts. If a satellite component has caused physical harm, property damage, or fatal injuries to you or a loved one, our firm is prepared to pursue justice and financial compensation.
Starlink satellites are part of a large network launched by SpaceX, a private aerospace company owned by Elon Musk. These satellites orbit the Earth at low altitudes to provide global high-speed internet. The constellation currently includes over 7,000 satellites, with thousands more planned.
Each satellite is designed to remain in orbit for roughly five years before being intentionally de-
orbited. The expectation is that re-entry into the atmosphere will incinerate the satellite entirely. However, recent incidents have shown that certain parts — particularly components made of aluminum, ceramic, and high-temperature silicon — may survive the descent and crash into populated areas.
According to SpaceX’s own admissions, approximately 5% of a satellite’s mass could survive re-entry. While these fragments are engineered to land with less than three joules of energy, actual crash events have proven otherwise. In one case, a 2.5-kilogram (5.5-pound) piece of aluminum from a failed Starlink satellite landed on a Canadian farm. The debris came from a satellite that failed to properly de-orbit after a malfunction during launch.
Another incident involved a laptop-sized component — believed to be a control board — that landed in Saskatchewan. SpaceX later confirmed its Starlink origin. Although the company issued a check for the recovered piece, the incident raises serious concerns about liability, safety oversight, and the risk to human life.
Falling satellite debris can cause severe injuries or death. Even a small object falling from orbit can have devastating effects due to its high-speed impact. The known risks include:
Starlink components may crash through rooftops, strike pedestrians, or cause fatal auto accidents. With tens of thousands of new satellites being planned, the likelihood of future injuries is increasing.
Beyond physical injury, falling debris from Starlink satellites can cause costly damage to homes, vehicles, farmland, and commercial buildings. In past cases, large fragments of satellites were found embedded in fields or scorched into soil. These impacts can destroy roofs, shatter windows, ignite fires, and ruin crops.
Economic compensation may be available for:
SpaceX previously assured the public that their satellites would burn up completely during re-entry. However, that has not consistently happened. Reports show that certain older satellites — including some launched five years ago — were not designed to ensure complete disintegration. Manufacturing and control system flaws have also contributed to improper de-orbiting and failed launches.
Although SpaceX says it has updated designs for its newer V2 and upcoming V3 satellites, older satellites continue to pose a risk. Moreover, safety predictions like “1 in 100 million” risk of human casualty fail to account for the unpredictable nature of satellite re-entry and the growing number of incidents.
Victims of falling satellite debris — or the families of those who have been killed — may be entitled to pursue a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit. Product liability and negligence laws apply when a company fails to design or operate a product in a reasonably safe way.
A claim may be filed for:
Legal action may target the satellite manufacturer, launch provider, or any entity responsible for the failure to ensure safe re-entry and debris disposal.
