According to an online news report published on fox13memphis.com, a Memphis grandmother is urging families to dispose of the Fisher-Price Rock N Play Sleeper, which has been linked to the deaths of multiple babies, including her own grandson. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) initially recalled the product in April 2019, citing 30 reported infant fatalities but has now reissued the recall due to eight more deaths, bringing the total to around 100. The deaths occurred after infants rolled from their backs onto their stomachs or side while unrestrained or under other circumstances. Fisher-Price notes that in some of the reports, it has been unable to confirm the circumstances of the incidents or that the product was a Rock N Play Sleeper.

The Rock N Play Sleeper was sold at major stores nationwide, including Walmart, Target, and online at Amazon, from September 2009 through April 2019 for between $40 and $149. At the time of the initial recall, approximately 4.7 million units had been produced. The CPSC is now urging parents and caregivers to check their homes and daycares and remove the sleeper from use. The CPSC also warns that the Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler rocker, which is similar in appearance, is also unsafe for infant sleep.

The grandmother, Keisha Edwards, shared her family’s story in hopes of preventing another family from experiencing the same tragedy, stressing that before purchasing any baby product, it is important to check if it has been recalled. If you have a Rock N Play Sleeper, you are encouraged to throw it out or contact Fisher-Price for a refund or credit. Commissioner Richard Trumka of the CPSC expressed his sadness for the families affected and stressed that the Rock N Play could not remain in homes and daycares.
