Exactech, Incorporated has issued a recall announcement declaring the implant manufacturer has begun a recall of tens of thousands of its polyethylene knee, ankle, and hip implant systems due to potentially damaged Polyethylene Liners and Hip Cups. The massive recall affects Exactech polyethylene inserts, hip liners, and Acetabular cups. According to Exactech’s recall announcement, the company discovered that 1,000s of its knee, hip, and ankle liners and implants were packaged improperly, leaving the polyethylene (plastic) inserts susceptible to oxygen exposure. Oxygen can cause the polyethylene implants to degrade rapidly and, if implanted in a patient, could lead to implant rejection and failure. Patients who have been implanted with a damaged liner or implant will require revision surgery. Some adverse medical reports state that some Exactech polyethylene implant patients have suffered substantial bone loss and required additional surgical repairs, including bone revision surgeries. This has lead to the Exactech lawsuit that is now being talked about.
If you or a member of your family was implanted with one of the recalled polyethylene hip, ankle, or knee implants/liners, and are experiencing severe side effects, have undergone surgical repair, or must undergo additional revision surgeries, you may be eligible for substantial monetary compensation.
If you or a member of your family has sustained harm or required revision surgery because of a defective suffered harm due to a defecting hip, ankle, or knee liner or implant, contact Parker Waichman LLP for a free consultation. According to Exactech’s recall notification, thousands of Exactech’s knee, ankle, and hip liners were distributed in “non-conforming” packaging. The recall announcement states that the packaging did not protect the liners from exposure to air, which causes oxidation. When the implants start to oxidize, the implants could start breaking down before they are surgically implanted in patients leading to cracking, bone loss, and/or accelerated wear. Exactech’s recall announcement affirms that the packaging also lacked an essential second barrier that contains ethylene-vinyl alcohol, which is required to prevent oxygen exposure prior to implantation in patients.
Patients who are affected by the Exactech polyethylene liner recall should have already received a recall letter from Exactech that explains the issue and what affected patients should do, especially if they are experiencing symptoms of a failing implant. Polyethylene liner patients who are experiencing the following symptoms should contact their surgeon to schedule a medical assessment and treatment.
The symptoms of a failing Exactech hip implant might include:
Polyethylene liner patients who are not currently experiencing these symptoms should discuss this important implant recall with the surgeon during their next implant checkup. Exactech’s Polyethylene liner recall announcement states that patients should have an x-ray examination of their implant, even if they are not suffering the symptoms of a failing polyethylene liner implant.
Polyethylene liner implant patients place a substantial amount of trust in implant manufacturers that they will make safe and effective surgical implants. However, implant patients suffer significantly when their medical device is unsafe, defective, or fails. If you or a family member received one of these recalled Exactech polyethylene knee, hip, or ankle liners, it is crucial that you talk with your surgeon to find out if your liner/implant is part of this important implant recall. If your polyethylene liner implant has been recalled, your surgeon should examine your implant to decide if you require revision surgery.
Patients implanted with a recalled Exactech polyethylene liner should also discuss their claim with one of our Exactech lawsuit attorneys to decide if they are eligible to file a lawsuit against Exactech to obtain monetary compensation. Surgical implant manufacturers must be held responsible for the damage their dangerous products cause you and other patients. Our product liability lawsuit lawyers are here to help you or your family member through the legal process and obtain just economic compensation for your losses, pain, and suffering.
