STATEN ISLAND, NY- According to silive.com, a woman is facing charges after allegedly shoplifting at a strip mall in Eltingville and committing a hit-and-run. The suspect, 25-year-old Tracey Mitchell, reportedly injured a pedestrian with her vehicle before fleeing.
Police reports indicate that Mitchell was operating a white Dodge pickup truck in a parking lot at about 5:15 p.m. on September 26, 2018. Mitchell allegedly backed into a 56-year-old pedestrian and knocked him onto the pavement causing injuries.
Mitchell is reported to have then driven away from the scene of the crash. Mitchell was also caught shoplifting in the same strip mall on September 13, 2018. The suspect was spotted on a surveillance video that shows her stealing a “LOL Charm Surprise.
The charges against Mitchell include “leaving the scene of an incident without reporting there was a personal injury and petit larceny.” Mitchell denies the hit-and-run charges and claims that the victim and her family are engaged in a tenancy dispute. She is claiming that the victim is trying to use the allegations against her to get the upper hand in the tenancy case.
New York experiences tens of thousands of hit-and-run crashes every year. While many of the incidents do not involve injuries or fatalities, many of them do. In 2017, over 5,000 people sustained injuries in hit-and-runs. Statistically, one person dies in a hit-and-run collision in New York every week. Only around 9 percent of drivers who injure someone and leave the scene are ever arrested. The arrest rate for fatal hit-and-runs is also fairly low with only 24 out of 62 hit-and-run fatalities leading to arrests.
