According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall campaign #22V063000, Tesla is recalling several models of its motor vehicles due to a defect that may cause its Pedestrian Warning Sound to be obscured. When the Pedestrian Warning Sound is obscured, pedestrians might not be aware that the recalled vehicles are approaching, increasing the chance of a collision causing injury or death. The components affected include the Electrical and Forward Collision Avoidance systems on 578,607 Tesla motor vehicles.
The safety recall involves some 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2022 Model S, Model X, Model Y vehicles. According to the news report, the Boombox function permits sounds to be played via an external speaker as the Tesla vehicle is in motion. This speak could obfuscate the Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) sounds, which does not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, called the “Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.”
Tesla is correcting the issue by performing free over-the-air (OTA) software updates to disable the Boombox feature while the motor vehicle is in Neutral, Drive, and Reverse modes. Tesla will send out owner recall notification letters by April 5, 2022. The affected Tesla owners can contact Tesla customer service and use Tesla’s recall number SB-22-00-003 for more information.
The recalled motor vehicles include:
