Transvaginal mesh implant devices are intended to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI); however, thousands of women allege that the pelvic devices led to complications such as erosion and extrusion of the mesh, perforation of organs, vaginal bleeding, chronic infection, pain, and emotional distress.
Boston Scientific, a pelvic mesh device maker, has lost a number of large verdicts in lawsuits brought over its transvaginal mesh products, including a $100 million verdict handed down in May 2015.

In May 2015, a Delaware jury ordered Boston Scientific to pay $100 million to a woman who alleged that the Pinnacle and Advantage Fit vaginal mesh inserts were defective and caused her injuries. Her lawsuit also alleged that Boston Scientific hid dangers allegedly associated with these devices and accused the device maker of using sub-standard materials. The verdict was composed of $25 million in compensatory damages and $75 million in punitive damages.
The jury found that the devices were defectively designed and that Boston Scientific executives hid the risks from the plaintiff. Additionally, the jury found that the company engaged in fraud by failing to inform doctors about the faulty design of the devices.
Boston Scientific has lost a number of other large verdicts in the transvaginal mesh litigation. The company’s first legal loss over the pelvic mesh devices occurred in September 2014, when a verdict of $73 million was handed down.
In the second federal trial over pelvic mesh claims, a jury ordered the company to pay $18.5 million to four women implanted with the Obtryx Transobturator Mid-Urethra Sling System pelvic mesh device.
In the first federal trial over its Pinnacle Pelvic Floor Repair Kit, Boston Scientific was ordered to pay $26.7 million to four women who alleged that the mesh caused serious injuries.
