EAST MORICHES, Long Island, NY — A worker at a nursery died when her fellow employee who was operating a box truck struck her while driving in reverse. According to Newsday, the fatal collision occurred on Wednesday, September 25, 2018, around 11:00 a.m. at a plant nursery in East Moriches. Suffolk County Police officers in conjunction with investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) continue to investigate the fatal incident.
The worker, 49-year-old Julia Molina of Mastic, died at the scene of the collision. The details from the initial investigation revealed to this point suggest that Ms. Molina was walking on a service road adjacent to Sunrise Highway near Chapman Boulevard. The service road borders the Kurt Weiss property. Around 11:00 a.m., a box truck driven by Ms. Molina’s co-worker, whom police did not name, backed into the pedestrian. Emergency services pronounced Ms. Molina dead at the scene. The driver of the box truck stayed nearby at the scene of the crash and spoke with Homicide detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department as well as investigators from OSHA.
The police investigation began with a safety check of the box truck. Suffolk County police detectives and OSHA must determine if the truck was safe to drive. Accordingly, the investigators will examine the truck to learn if the rear-facing mirrors, steering, brakes, warning devices such as a backing warning, and other safety features were operational. Suffolk Police detectives did not say if they would seek criminal charges against the driver.
According to analysis from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 216 people died in work-related incidents in 2016 in New York State. Another 56 workers killed in New York City in 2016. Many of those killed were victims of falls. However, many workers also died when a piece of machinery or vehicle struck them on the job site.
