General Mills has initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of its Gold Medal Unbleached and Bleached All Purpose Flour in two-, five-, and ten-pound bags. The recall, announced on April 28, 2023, affects products with the “better if used by” dates of March 27 and 28, 2024, due to potential Salmonella Infantis contamination discovered during routine product sampling.
The recall specifically targets two date codes of the five- and ten-pound bags of Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour and two date codes of the two- and five-pound bags of Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour. It’s important to note that this recall does not affect any other types of Gold Medal Flour.
General Mills urges consumers to inspect their pantries and safely discard any products falling under this recall. Those who have disposed of the affected products can reach out to General Mills Consumer Relations via their hotline listed on their website.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advise against consuming raw products containing flour due to potential health risks. Salmonella Infantis, the bacteria in question, can be eliminated by heat through baking, frying, sautéing or boiling flour-based products. Furthermore, all surfaces, hands, and utensils should be thoroughly cleaned after handling flour or dough.
The following products, currently in stores or consumers’ pantries, are included in this voluntary recall:
Gold Medal Unbleached All Purpose Flour, 5LB (UPC 000-16000-19610) and 10LB (UPC 000-16000-19580), with “Better if Used by” dates of 27MAR2024 and 28MAR2024; and Gold Medal Bleached All Purpose Flour, 2LB (UPC 000-16000-10710) and 5LB (UPC 000-16000-10610), with “Better if Used by” dates of 27MAR2024 and 28MAR2024.
Salmonella Infantis infection can lead to symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pains, typically appearing within six hours to six days after infection and lasting four to seven days. The CDC reports around 1.2 million cases annually in the U.S. Consumers exhibiting any such symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
