Stop Using “Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattresses” Due to Fire Risks, Urges US Safety Agency
August 25, 2023 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent notice, asking consumers to discontinue the use of specific “Cool Gel Ventilated Memory Foam” mattresses from Classic Brands Holdings LLC. These mattresses are identified as failing to adhere to federal fire safety guidelines, putting users at significant risk of a fire hazard.
Classic Brands Holdings LLC, based in Columbia, Maryland, is shutting down its operations and is, therefore, unable to carry out a formal recall.
The safety advisory pertains to approximately 21,655 mattresses produced in Spain from January 2021 to August 2022. These mattresses were sold via multiple online retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Wayfair, as well as Home Depot, Macy’s, and Target websites between March 2021 and October 2022. These mattresses came in several sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, King, and California King. The label “Cool Gel Memory Foam” is visibly displayed on the side of the mattress.
Customers are encouraged to inspect the manufacturing label on the mattress to determine if it falls within the affected date range and place of manufacture. If the mattress was produced in Spain within the indicated period, or if the manufacturing label has been removed, it is strongly advised to cease using the mattress and dispose of it properly. Mattresses produced outside of this timeframe or in other locations are not subject to this advisory.
The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately dispose of these mattresses in compliance with local or state guidelines for recycling. For consumers located in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Oregon, additional recycling resources can be found at Mattress Recycling Council.
The agency is also asking people not to buy, sell, or donate these potentially dangerous products, including to second-hand stores. Any incidents or injuries linked to these mattresses should be reported at SaferProducts.gov.
For additional safety-related information and to stay updated on recalls and safety issues, visit CPSC.gov or follow the agency’s social media channels.
The CPSC is a federal agency responsible for safeguarding the public from risks related to consumer products. Federal laws forbid the sale of items that have been subjected to a mandated or voluntary recall coordinated with the CPSC.
For emergency information, consumers can reach out to the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 or TTY 301-595-7054. This letter release number is 23-266.
