Life Raft Treats Broadens Scope of Ice Cream Product Recalls due to Potential Listeria Contamination
Life Raft Treats, the North Charleston, SC-based dessert company, has announced an extension in the recall of select ice cream products, specifically the ”
Life Raft Treats
” and “Life is Peachy” lines, amid concerns of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This information was publicized by the company on September 19, 2023, and further disseminated by the FDA on September 22, 2023, as a part of a public awareness initiative. It is crucial to note that the FDA’s sharing of this information does not imply an endorsement of the company or the product.
This voluntary recall now encompasses products with “Best By Dates” up to August 8, 2024. Listeria Monocytogenes is a bacterium that poses serious health risks, especially to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience transient symptoms including high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, the infection could be fatal for at-risk demographics and could cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
The notification of potential contamination was conveyed to the company by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) on September 18, 2023, leading to the expanded recall. It was found that an additional lot of “Not Fried Chicken” ice cream tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Given that “Life Is Peachy” ice cream products were manufactured in the same facility room, the recall was extended to this product line as a precautionary measure. Thankfully, there have been no reported illnesses related to this recall to date.
The products implicated in this recall include “Life is Peachy” 6 count box, and “Not Fried Chicken” Ice Cream in both 64 oz buckets and 2.5 oz bars, with the UPC code 8 60006 18210 6. Please refer to attached images for specific product identification. These products, packaged in laminated buckets and plastic wrap, have been distributed to consumers across numerous states via online sales, specifically through Goldbelly.com.
Consumers in possession of the aforementioned products are strongly advised against consuming them. They are urged to return these products to their point of purchase for a complete refund or, alternatively, to dispose of them safely. For any queries or additional information, consumers can reach out to Life Raft Treats at [email protected].
This extended recall is being executed in collaboration with, and with the awareness of, the Food and Drug Administration to ensure consumer safety and prevent any potential health hazards related to the consumption of the affected products.
