The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent warning to consumers, advising them to cease the usage of Jangostor Large Water Beads promptly. These water beads have been found to contain elevated levels of acrylamide, a substance that violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Ingestion of these large water beads poses a significant toxicity risk, particularly to children, potentially leading to adverse health consequences.
Notably, CPSC has received reports of two incidents wherein two-year-old children required surgical intervention to remove Jangostor Water Beads after ingesting them. When ingested, these water beads have the propensity to expand within the body, causing severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages, or even life-threatening injuries, necessitating surgical removal.
Despite CPSC’s warning and the reported incidents, Jangostor, situated in China, has not cooperated with an acceptable recall of the product. Consumers who have purchased these water beads will receive direct notification of this hazard.
Jangostor Large Water Bead sets were predominantly sold online at Amazon.com from March 2017 through November 2023, priced around $10. These sets come in two sizes: a bottle containing 11 ounces of large water beads, and a bag containing 3.5 ounces of large water beads. Partially hydrated, the large water beads are available in eight colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and clear. The packaging, predominantly yellow, bears the brand name “Jangostor” and the descriptor “Large water beads,” along with instructions to “Just add water” and a note stating “BOUNCY, Squishy, & Beautiful.”
In light of these findings, CPSC urges consumers to immediately discontinue the use of Jangostor Large Water Beads and dispose of the product safely in the trash. Any incidents involving injury or product defects are strongly encouraged to be reported to CPSC via www.SaferProducts.gov.
Individual Commissioners associated with CPSC may provide additional statements on this matter or other pertinent topics. For further information or statements from commissioners, please visit www.cpsc.gov/commissioners.
